Boys will be boys

Yep. So our day got really off track when I happened to mention that I saw a caterpillar on the front stoop when I put the mail out this morning. Jonathan ended up out there with the door wide open watching it crawl around. He finally started begging me to let it come inside.

After I explained why we couldn't just let a caterpillar in our house, we ended up putting it inside a mason jar with holes punched in the top. This, of course, was with the promise that finding a more suitable home would be added to our list of things to do today. But it quickly took over. We left after lunch on a quest to find a bug house to make a new home in. Because I'm cheap, we headed to Target (well first was the mall to pick up a wedding shower gift that took way too long to wrap at the register) to get the one we had seen in the $1 section. Of course, because we needed one, they were all gone. A few stores later, we ended up finding one at Wal-Mart.

When we got home, we went to the front yard to dig up a plant to put in the home. We tucked the roots into a little plastic container with a bit of dirt and water. Then we put grass and a bit of dirt on the bottom. And of course we put in a stick just in case he decides he needs to become a moth sometime soon--and a bottle top with a bit of water.

Then while Jonathan was taking the extra sticks back out to the yard I hear him yelling, "Mommy! Mommy!" I went to see what was going on, and he had found another caterpillar on the steps. I tried to convince him that it would be crowded with two, but the new one ended up in the bug house anyway. So now we have two caterpillars who are probably quite traumatized by the events of their day, especially the periodic shaking they experience in their new home. We'll see how long they last. At least it made for a happy boy today.

  1. That's awesome! You better appreciate his eagerness to learn and explore. I hope and pray it never fades.

  2. All boys need caterpillars. They are fuzzy and fun to play with. After all it IS a cheap pet. I bet their names are Henry and Jerry. Maybe one will be popsicle since he is determined to name something popsicle. Love you all. Nana
