How We Do Homeschool: English Grammar

English Grammar

We are working through First Language Lessons for the Well Trained Mind. This is a gentle introduction to English grammar with 200 lessons spanning 1st and 2nd grade. It also leads you through introducing narrations beginning orally and eventually transitioning to writing them. It introduces students to copywork allowing you to begin simply and working toward doing dictations where the student writes a sentence that is presented orally.

The lessons in this book are simple and generally run around 5-10 minutes for us. Most offer additional enrichment activities. It begins orally and transitions your child into more written exercises while covering everything from poetry recitations to learning about phone numbers and addresses.

This book retails for $18.95. It’s around $13 on Amazon, and I think I paid less on Ebay. I also saw one at a used bookstore last week for $5. As you might guess, it is recommended in TWTM.

In addition to this, we work on English memory work that is provided in our Foundations curriculum for each week. This year, we have been memorizing prepositions and helping verbs as well as the definition of each.
